Chapter 11

I sat up and kicked my legs wildly.

“Whoa! Calm down!” Leon grabbed my shoulders and pushed me back down.

I was in Sarah’s basement. The computer was in the corner and I could see the trunks from where I lay. They’d put me back on my cot.

I shook my head, trying to clear it. “What’s going on? Where’s Sarah?”

“She’s fine,” Leon sat back. “She’s the one who saved your butt. You fell into a burning building apparently, but she pulled you out.”

“How? I should be dead.”

I tested my fingers and felt along my arms and legs. There were plenty of scratches and bruises, but clearly no broken bones or serious cuts. My head hurt and I it was very sore right around the crown area.

“You’ll have to ask Sarah about specifics,” said Leon. “She said you ran into Thirteen and then the monster attacked you. How either of you got out of there is beyond me.”

“Where is she?”

“She’s sleeping. After watching you all day, we made her go take a break.”

“What about…?” I waved vaguely at the window. “What about the city? Are we still under attack?”

“No, it disappeared. Just like last time. Dr. Henry has no idea where it went. There was more damage to the city, but no casualties.”

I slumped back onto the makeshift bed, thinking furiously. “I can’t believe I’ve been asleep since this morning.”

“Yesterday morning,” Leon corrected.

“What the…” I sat up again with some effort.

The monster had come and gone just like last time. Why? Was Laevis resisting? Were they still waiting for something? Some special moment to happen?

We were all on borrowed time.

“Lutosa?” I asked.

“Their army still hasn’t arrived.”

There was some time left for whatever reason. We had to take advantage of it.

“Sarah really stayed with me all day?”

“Yes.” Leon smiled softly.

“Where is she?”

“Upstairs.”

I sat up.

“I should warn you, Sam found her way here.”

“Oh, good!” I’d forgotten about abandoning her. Good thing she was resourceful.

“She told us about your plans.” I froze and looked at Leon. He was grimacing. “That was right before Sarah agreed to finally take a break. Ricky didn’t take it well, either.”

“Oh…” I bit my lip. “Should I talk to them?”

He shrugged. “It’s really none of my business. But yes, you should.”

I stood shakily and made my way to the stairs. This was the worst possible scenario. Why hadn’t Sam kept her big mouth shut?

When I opened the door at the top of the stairs, I was brought up short. Sarah was sitting with her back to the wall and her mother was crouched next to her. She stood abruptly. Her eyes were read and puffy, but she put on a bright smile.

“You’re awake! Are you feeling okay?”

“Yeah,” I said. “Just got up. Leon told me what happened. Thanks for getting me out.”

“Pshaw!” Sarah waved a hand.

I cocked my head. She’d never said anything like “Pshaw” before.

“You should definitely stay at least one more night,” said Mrs. Charles. “I don’t want you traveling until I’m sure you can handle it.”

“Thanks.”

“Talked to Sam,” Sarah said.
